Using QR Codes for Restaurant Loyalty Programs and Repeat Visits

Loyalty programs live or die on friction. A guest who has to download an app mid-meal is a guest who gives up. QR codes remove a step: scan, land on a sign-up page, done, no app store required.

Where to place the code

Receipts and check presenters convert best because they land at the exact moment a guest is deciding whether to come back. Table tents work for awareness but see lower completion since guests are mid-meal, not making a decision yet.

Designing the incentive

  • A specific, immediate offer ("10% off your next visit") outperforms vague point systems for first-time sign-up
  • Tie the offer to a return window (7-14 days) to nudge timing, not just eventual return
  • Track scan-to-signup completion separately from scan volume; a high scan count with low completion points to a landing page problem, not a placement problem

Measuring what matters

The number that actually matters isn't total scans, it's repeat scans from the same tracked link over time, which signals guests coming back and re-engaging. A tracked QR code with scan analytics shows this pattern directly instead of relying on redemption codes alone.
